Workshop Description

This is an advanced level course designed for general practitioners that have completed the Beale's Best Fracture Principles course (or equivalent) and have some experience with fracture repair. This will be the first in a series of advanced courses that are designed to progressively train veterinarians to reach a high level of expertise in veterinary orthopedics. This course focuses on decision-making and repair of more difficult fractures. Articular fractures can be difficult due to the inability to clearly see the fracture components. In addition, it is essential to achieve perfect anatomic reduction of the articular surface and rigid stabilization. Inadequate reduction will lead to debilitating osteoarthritis and poor stability will lead to non-union. Participants will learn the important principles of articular fracture repair and apply them to comminuted articular fractures of the stifle and tarsus. This course will also teach participants how to manage a comminuted ulna fracture in combination with a radial head luxation. These challenging fractures are occasionally seen in dogs and cats. Fractures of the metacarpal and metatarsal bones are common in dogs and cats. This course will teach the indications and techniques for surgical repair of these difficult but common fractures. The challenges continue on Day 2 when participants will learn how to revise an infected non-union tibial fracture, repair a lumbar spine fracture and a calcaneal fracture.

This course will familiarize participants with fracture repair techniques through lecture and clinical case presentations. Following lecture and case review, participants will repair fractures on plastic bone models and cadavers/ Postoperative radiographs will be taken to evaluate the participants repair technique.

Workshop Objectives

• Learn techniques to repair more difficult fractures seen in dogs and cats.
• Learn how to surgically approach, reduce and stabilize articular fractures.
• Learn how to surgically approach, reduce and stabilize metabone fractures.
• Learn how to surgically approach, reduce and stabilize fracture of the lumbar spine and calcaneus.
• Learn how to revise an infected non-union fracture of the tibia.

Prerequisites

This workshop is appropriate for specialist and general practitioners who have previous fracture repair knowledge and skill and an interest in improving their orthopedic knowledge and skills.

CE Credits - RACE Approved

This workshop will meet the requirements for 16 CE hours of continuing education credits in jurisdiction which recognizes AAAVSB RACE approval.
