Orthopedics for Veterinary Technicians Online Course is designed to provide technicians with a foundation in veterinary orthopedics, preoperative and postoperative managing of a surgery, the importance of sterilization, and how to assist an orthopedic surgeon. It also covers critical responsibilities such as sterilization, instrument care, and radiology safety. By the end of this course, learners will be prepared to contribute to orthopedic surgical teams and provide optimal care for orthopedic patients.
A total of 2, RACE approved, CE credit is earned for successful completion.
Following completion of this online course,
a participant will be able to:
- Define veterinary orthopedics.
- Identify and describe the sterile and non-sterile areas of the hospital.
- Review how to protect clothing when leaving the sterile area, and when scrubbing into a procedure.
- Sterilize and store equipment.
- Handle instruments with care and intention.
- Understand the basics of how and when to reprocess instruments.
- Summarize safety precautions for radiology.
- Review common preoperative radiography views.
- Understand purpose for computerized tomography (CT) scans and fluoroscopy imaging.
- Understand patient positioning and available instrumentation to assist with patient positioning.
- Summarize the importance of anticipating the surgeon's move and strategies for implementing this into practice.
- Summarize when and why to take postoperative radiographs.
- Review how to clean an operating room after surgery and disposal of surgical waste.
- Consider general postoperative care for an orthopedic patient.
