Workshop Description -

This is an advanced level course designed for general practitioners that have completed the Beales Best Fracture Principles course (or equivalent) and have some experience with orthopedic surgery.

Hip dysplasia is a developmental problem in dogs and cats. The management of hip dysplasia depends on the age of the patient and the severity of disease. Juvenile hip dysplasia can be treated conservatively but progressive instability and OA are likely.

Surgical options for the juvenile patient affected by hip dysplasia includes juvenile pubic symphysiodesis (JPS) and double pelvic osteotomy (DPO). Adult hip dysplasia can be treated by conservative treatment, femoral head ostectomy (FHO) and Total Hip Replacement (THR). This course will discuss diagnosis, decision-making and surgical repair of dogs and cats having hip dysplasia. In addition, diagnosis and treatment of hip dislocation and capital physeal fractures of the hip will also be addressed.

Workshop Objectives -

  1. Learn how to assess hip stability with an orthopedic exam.
  2. Learn proper radiographic technique to assess hip stability and OA.
