Course Description

Managing difficult and complex fractures can be a challenge for any orthopedic surgeon.  In this course, we will discuss some of those challenges associated with advanced fracture management, including stabilization techniques, as well as, avoiding and managing complications. Participants will be introduced to locking bone plate systems.  Participants will perform surgical stabilization of complex fractures of the pelvis, as well as articular and periarticular fractures, including lateral humeral condylar fractures. Participants are required to have completed a basic introductory fracture management course and be familiar with the anatomy, surgical approaches and with bone plate fixation.  

Course Requirements:

• Successful completion of a Principle of Fracture Management course
• Review of the anatomy and approaches to the long bones, elbow joint, stifle joint and pelvis 
• Review of basic lag screw and bone plating principles.

Learning Objectives:

•         Following successful completion of this course, the participant will: 
• Successfully plan surgical stabilization of complex fractures of the pelvis, distal femoral condyle and Humeral shaft and condyles 
• Successfully execute surgical stabilization of complex fractures of the pelvis, distal femoral condyle and Humeral shaft and condyles on plastic bones and cadavers 
• Have strategies to deal with complications such as non-union and osteomyelitis
