Workshop Description

Managing long bone fractures in small animals can be challenging. This workshop provides a structured, hands-on approach to fracture repair, covering fundamental techniques for stabilizing both simple and comminuted fractures. Participants will gain practical experience with a variety of fixation methods, including locking plates, pins, and lag screws.

The workshop begins with self-paced online learning modules, offering three hours of foundational instruction to ensure participants are well-prepared before the in-person workshop. At the Education Center, experienced instructors will lead in-depth lectures and demonstrations, followed by guided dry lab and wet lab hands-on practice. Clinical cases, postoperative care strategies, and complication management will be discussed.

Locking plate technology, also known as internal fixation, will be a key focus. This system simplifies fracture management, providing stability while reducing postoperative complications. The workshop is designed to equip veterinarians with practical skills and a deeper understanding of fracture healing principles, enhancing their confidence in managing orthopedic cases in clinical practice.

Workshop Objectives

  • During this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to repair fractures using locking plates, pins, and lag screws. Locking plates and screws (also known as internal fixator) simplify treatment of long bone fractures in small animals.
  • During this workshop, participants will familiarize themselves with the implants system through lecture and clinical case presentations. Following lecture and case review, participants will repair fractures on cadavers and plastic bone models. Postoperative management will also be discussed. Postoperative radiographs can be taken to assess the participant's repair technique.
  • Lecture and hands-on laboratory sessions (plastic bone and cadaver) will focus on and reinforce:
    • Surgical approach
    • Tips on successful fracture reduction
    • Repair of simple and challenging comminuted fractures
