Workshop Description
In this workshop, discussion will focus on decision-making for fracture repair of the tibia, femur and radius using bone plates. We will teach instrumentation, plate contouring and application techniques and give valuable practical tips. This course will employ lectures, clinical case presentations and a laboratory repairing created fracture on plastic bone models. Following lecture and case review, participants will repair fractures on plastic bone models.
Postoperative radiographs will be taken to assess the participant's repair technique. Postoperative management will also be discussed.
Workshop Objectives
The Principles of Fracture Repair workshop is designed to provide participants with a basic, fundamental knowledge of bone healing and the favorable impact internal fixation of fractures can have on the healing. Lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions (plastic bone) will focus on and reinforce:
- Understand the principles of bone healing and the differences between secondary and primary bone healing.
- Surgical approach to the femur, tibia and radius with methods to increase exposure.
- Review fracture classification and choice of fixation.
- Appreciate the biomechanics and decision making process for using bone plates and methods of bone plating (compression, neutralization, and bridging).
- Discuss fracture examples to allow participants to select appropriate cases for their level of experience..
- Discuss fracture reduction techniques..
- Practice plate contouring and application on fractures created on plastic bone models..
