This one-day course focuses on the assessment and management of acute ocular disorders at initial presentation. Teaching will be primarily case-based, with a strong emphasis on practical clinical decision-making.

 

It is recommended that attendees have some experience with managing ocular conditions. Some confidence in performing an ophthalmic examination as well as basic eyelid surgery will allow the attendees to build on this skill set with the topics in this day course.

Course Description

This one-day course focuses on the assessment and management of acute ocular disorders at initial presentation, with teaching primarily case-based and centered on practical clinical decision-making. Attendees should already have a basic understanding of ophthalmic examination and surgical skills. During the course, we will cover the evaluation and management of a variety of conditions, including eyelid abnormalities, corneal ulceration, uveitis, glaucoma, acute vision loss, and orbital disease.

 

In the wet-lab, participants will gain hands-on experience with key surgical procedures such as eyelid laceration repair, tacking sutures for entropion, rotational eyelid grafts for large defects, canthotomy and reduction of globe proptosis, and 360° conjunctival grafting for severe corneal ulceration.

Course Objectives

At the end of this workshop delegates should be able to:

  • Effectively examine and diagnose emergency ocular disorders
  • Detailed review of diagnosis and management of corneal ulceration
  • Practice a variety of ophthalmic surgical techniques useful for treating urgent ocular cases
