Workshop Description

The overall goal is improving the safety and efficacy of orthopedic diagnostics and procedures used in veterinary orthopedic surgery through the use of digital engineering and 3D printing.

This course will allow participants to learn how to transfer a CT scan into a 3D rendering, how to manipulate 3D renderings, how to 3D print bone replicas, how to design and produce patient-specific jigs, how to use 3D printed bones and jigs to prepare for a range of complex orthopedic procedures. Case based discussions, laboratory exercises and computer based sessions will cover cases of angular limb deformities, traumatic injuries, joint replacement candidates and spinal injuries.

Participants registered for this course need to bring a laptop with the following requirements:

Software

  • Windows® 11 22H2  
  • Microsoft Edge® or equivalent 
  • PDF viewer 
  • .NET Framework 4.8 (or higher) 
  • Microsoft Edge® WebView2 (If Mimics Flow is used) 

Hardware 

  •  Ninth generation Intel® Core™ i7 or equivalent 
  • 16 GB RAM 
  • DirectX® 12.0 compliant AMD Radeon/NVIDIA® GeForce® card with 2 GB RAM 
  • 40 GB free hard disk space 
  • Resolution of 1920x1080 or higher 

Supported operating systems

The following operating system versions were used to test Materialise Mimics Medical 28.0: 

  • Windows Server 2022 Standard 21H2 RDP 
  • Windows 11 Enterprise version 22H2

 

Target Audience:

Surgeons with advanced orthopedic training (previous attendance to master level courses highly desired)

 

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Import CT images into segmentation software
  • Reconstruct, manipulate, and prepare a rendering for 3D printing
  • Select a 3D printing method
  • Design a jig or guide intended for an osteotomy
  • 3D print bone replicas, jigs, and guides

The registration fee includes coffee/lunch breaks, a course reception on the 8th of June in Weetwood Hall, and a course certificate.
