This course is aimed at veterinary practitioners and veterinary residents with experience in managing small animal fractures, who want to develop and refine their skills and confidence in the management of more challenging fractures.

This course assumes an intermediate level of clinical familiarity with fracture decision- making and treatment, surgical approaches to the long bones and the application of locking bone plates. Prior completion of a Principles in Fracture Management course (Practical CPD, AO VET or equivalent course) is required to attend this course.

The course is practical and relevant for small animal general practice, combining short interactive lectures with in-depth case discussions and hands on practical sessions aimed at improving your knowledge, skills and confidence in reliably managing fracture cases.

Course Description

• Surgical approaches to the radius, femur, tibia and humerus
• Applying locking plates
• Short-segment oblique antebrachial fractures
• Plate-rod fixation of comminuted mid-diaphyseal femoral fractures
• Bone grafting from the proximal humerus
• Orthogonal plate fixation of comminuted distal tibial fractures
• Plate fixation of juxta-articular distal femoral fractures
• Plate application to the humerus
• Plate contouring
• Normograde placement of femoral intramedullary pins

Course Learning Objectives

• Assess and make appropriate treatment decisions for managing long bone fractures in small animals
• Develop and refine skills in surgical approaches to the long bones
• Plan strategies for the appropriate reduction of fractures 
• Develop familiarity with the application of locking plates in the management of more challenging long bone fractures
• Gain confidence in obtaining and placing a cancellous bone graft from the proximal humerus
