Principles of Fracture Repair Online Course – This course covers topics including reliable techniques and valuable, applicable tips for repairing both simple and more challenging comminuted fractures of long bones.  This course will take approximately 3 hours to complete.

Workshop Description

In this two-day workshop, discussion will focus on the diagnosis, decision-making, and treatment. Wewill teach reliable techniques and give valuable practical tips useful in repairing simple and more challenging comminuted fractures of long bones.

This course will familiarize participants with fracture repair techniques through lecture and clinical case presentations. Following lecture and case review, participants will repair fractures on plastic bone models and cadaver. Postoperative management and treatment of complications will also be taught.

Participants will have the opportunity to repair fractures using traditional plates, locking plates, pins & tension band, lag screws; Locking plates and screws (also known as internal fixator) simplify treatment of long bone fractures in small animals. The internal fixator shares the convenience of the external fixator without the hassles of postoperative management.

Workshop Objective

The Principles of Fracture Repair workshop is designed to provide participants with a basic, fundamental knowledge of bone healing and the favorable impact internal fixation of fractures can have on the healing. Lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions (plastic bone & cadaver) will focus on and reinforce:

  • Understand the principles of bone healing and the differences between secondary and primary bone healing.

  • Review fracture classification and choice of fixation.

  • Appreciate the biomechanics and decision making for intramedullary pins, cerclage wire, bone screws, bone plates and methods of bone plating (compression, neutralization, and bridging).

  • Discuss fracture fixation and surgical approaches for diaphyseal fractures of the radius/ulna, tibia, humerus, and femur.

  • Discuss the concept of direct versus indirect fracture reduction and decision making on approach.

  • Understand and review the pathophysiology and decision making on commonly seen long bone fractures in canines.
