Description

This advanced workshop is designed for veterinary surgeons, surgical residents, and experienced practitioners with a strong interest in orthopedics. Over the course of 2.5 days, an expert faculty with more than 30 years of clinical orthopedic experience will guide participants through advanced hybrid and circular external fixation principles, as well as emerging techniques and current trends in the field.

The curriculum integrates lectures, case-based discussions, and extensive hands-on training through the construction of fixation frames for the management of complex fractures, non-unions, bone defects, and limb salvage procedures. Instruction will also emphasize presurgical planning for angular limb deformities, correction of antebrachial length discrepancies, and the application of advanced imaging and 3D printing to support surgical decision-making.

In addition, modern biomechanical and surgical principles will be highlighted to ensure participants gain a comprehensive understanding of external fixation.

By the end of the course, attendees will have refined their technical skills, expanded their knowledge base, and enhanced their ability to apply the latest advancements in external fixation to clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop advanced skills in constructing frames for fractures, non-unions, bone defects, and other limb salvage techniques
  • Conduct a pre-surgical plan to effectively correct common angular limb deformities
  • Correct antebrachial length discrepancies for optimal surgical outcomes
  • Apply modern biomechanical and surgical principles when correcting elbow incongruities
  • Learn how to incorporate imaging technology and 3D printing into pre-surgical planning

What You'll Do in the Lab

Five hands-on labs run across the three days, building from component basics to advanced deformity correction. You will assemble hybrid and circular constructs on bone models, stabilize tibial and humeral fractures, and plan/correct angular limb deformities. Small-group case discussions and homework assignments connect each lab to clinical decisions.

  • Hybrid and circular components and construct applications
  • Stabilizing tibial fractures with hybrid constructs
  • Stabilizing humeral fractures with hybrid constructs
  • Stabilizing a tibial fracture with a circular construct
  • Planning angular correction with a hybrid construct
  • Correcting a radial deformity with a hybrid construct
  • Small group discussions
  • Homework and review: evening assignments reviewed with the instructors each morning
