Workshop Description

The majority of complications of THR are related to technical error, and therefore avoidance of technical error should be a fundamental goal of the surgical learning curve. When intraoperative complications occur, these are generally manageable, with preservation of the THR.

Through case presentations and discussions, procedure demonstrations, and instructor-mentored hands-on laboratory exercises, this workshop will help you address any procedural challenges you may be encountering or have experienced, and provide you with new skills, tricks, and tips to apply not only to the straightforward THR procedure but also to the more challenging THR patient.

Workshop Objectives

Recognise and Prevent Intraoperative Problems

• Identify contributors towards femoral fissure/fracture

• Practise techniques to avoid femoral fissure/fracture

• Optimise acetabular preparation for the saucerized acetabulum

• Prevent and recover from eccentric acetabular reaming

Complication Management — Hands-On

• Apply appropriate management strategies for femoral fracture during surgery, including cerclage wiring, bone plating, and implant modification techniques

• Practise acetabular cup revision techniques

• Practise femoral stem revision techniques

Clinical Decision-Making

• Review preoperative and intraoperative decision-making through case presentations and discussions

• Apply “what next” thinking across both common and uncommon complication scenarios

• Explore and discuss available technologies for improving surgical outcomes

Learning from Expert Practice

• Observe experienced instructors demonstrate complication management techniques in real time on cadaveric specimens

• Tableside expert mentorship to hone and advance your surgical skills

• Debrief and discuss outcomes, including when decisions proved harder than expected

The educational journey to learn Total Hip Replacement has been developed in conjunction with many of the industry’s leading orthopaedic surgeons. All attendees are expected to have comprehensive foundational and advanced orthopaedic knowledge and caseload.
